DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nCanstruction Powers Up Against Hunger\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Discovery Park will be hosting the 8th annual Canstruction Jr. on Monday\, Feb. 9\, 2026. This year’s theme is “Game Over for Hunger – Rated E for Everyone” and is open to students 10 to 18 years of age. This is your chance to bring video games to life for a great cause. Thanks to generous support from our sponsors\, Allen Searcy Builder-Contractor\, Inc. and Ben E. Keith Foods\, teams can purchase canned food items for their sculptures. Teams were also allowed to host canned food drives and fundraisers if additional cans are needed. \nOn the day of the event\, teams will bring their cans to Discovery Park of America to assemble their sculptures in a 7’ L x 7’ W x 7’ H area within a 3-hour time period. The sculptures will be judged and awards presented for Best of Show\, Best Use of Labels\, Most Creative\, Structural Ingenuity and Judge’s Favorite. The sculptures will remain on exhibit in the ATA room through February. Participating Teams will receive a free lunch. \nEach team will design and build a 3-D structure using only canned goods and other limited\, approved materials. \nHistory of Canstruction \nCanstruction® is an international charity competition where architects\, engineers\, students\, and others compete by building structures out of canned food. At the end of each competition or exhibition\, the food is donated to local hunger relief organizations. It was founded in 1992 by the late Cheri Melillo and her colleagues from the Society for Design Administration. The first official competition was held in November 1993. Since then\, over 50 million pounds of food have been donated. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nJoin us on Monday\, Jan. 19\, 2026\, as we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]The celebration begins at 11 a.m. in Dinosaur Hall. Our keynote speaker\, Dr. Mark McCloud\, Vice Chancellor for Access and Engagement at the University of Tennessee at Martin\, will share his perspective on building inclusive communities and carrying forward Dr. King’s dream in today’s world. \nThe Discovery Park Community Choir\, a newly formed group of singers and musicians from throughout our region\, will fill the space with a moving performance celebrating hope\, equality and peace. \nAfter the program\, families can participate in hands-on activities inspired by Dr. King’s most memorable quotes and take part in a special educational session exploring Dr. King’s relationships with other key civil rights leaders of the mid-20th century. \nAs the only federal holiday dedicated to national service\, MLK Day invites us all to give back. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.\, local community service and volunteer organizations will be on-site to help guests discover meaningful ways to get involved and make a difference. Visitors are also encouraged to bring canned goods to support local food banks.  Free admission to the 2026 King Day celebration is available for all. \nAs part of the 2026 King Day celebration\, Discovery Park will host a Student Essay Competition open to students at Obion County Central\, Union City and South Fulton\, as well as homeschoolers in grades 9 to 12. The top three essays will be announced during the program\, with prizes awarded to first-\, second- and third-place winners. The submission deadline is Jan. 15\, 2026. With over 27 years of experience in leadership\, diversity training\, and professional development\, Dr. McCloud currently serves as the Vice Chancellor for Access and Engagement at the University of Tennessee at Martin. His work has been featured in Forbes\, and he is the co-host of Two Sisters and The Doc podcast\, focusing on race\, relationships\, and careers.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_column_text] \n \n\nDiscovery Park Community Choir \nThe Discovery Park Community Choir brings together singers and musicians from around our area to form a powerful and uplifting ensemble. The group performs a variety of traditional and contemporary gospel music that reflects the spirit of hope and unity at the heart of Dr. King’s message. In 2025\, the choir was a part of June’s Juneteenth Celebration and the “Let It Glow” Kickoff.
